Education for children
According to a 2021 report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Romania has one of the highest rates of early school leaving in the European Union, with 17.5% of young people aged 18-24 having dropped out of school before completing upper secondary education.
In 2020, Romania ranked 43rd out of 79 countries in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which assesses the quality of education systems worldwide. The country's overall score was below the OECD average, indicating a need for improvement in reading, math, and science education.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted disparities in access to education in Romania. A 2020 UNICEF report found that only 54% of children in rural areas have access to digital devices for distance learning, compared to 83% in urban areas.
